What a CPI conversion actually tells you

Every result on this page is one ratio: the Consumer Price Index in the end year divided by the index in the start year. The CPI itself is one of the oldest continuous statistics the US government keeps — since 1913, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has priced a representative urban basket of goods and services (rent, food, fuel, medical care, and hundreds of other items) and chained the results into a single index. So when the calculator says $100 in 2000 corresponds to about $187 in 2025, it is saying: the average urban basket that cost $100 then costs $187 now. That is a statement about prices in general — deliberately not about any particular thing, which is both its power and its limitation.

The quiet violence of small percentages

Between 2000 and 2025 inflation averaged just 2.54% a year — close to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, and low by historical standards. Yet compounded over 25 years it added up to an 87% rise in prices: the dollar lost nearly half its buying power during one working career’s first act. Where the average hides the story

The long-run average of roughly 3% smooths over wildly different eras: near-zero and even negative inflation in the 1930s, the 13.5% peak of 1980’s oil-shock era, the placid 1990s and 2010s, and the 2022 spike to about 8% — visible in the calculator as 2020–2025 averaging 4.49% against 2.54% for the quarter-century. How is inflation calculated here?

This calculator uses the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) annual averages published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, covering 1913 through 2025. The adjusted amount is your dollars multiplied by the ratio of the two years' index values.

What does “buying power” mean?

Buying power is what your money can actually purchase. If prices double, each dollar buys half as much — its buying power fell 50% even though the dollar amount didn’t change.

When was US inflation the highest?

The modern peak was 1980, when CPI inflation averaged about 13.5% during the oil-shock era. More recently, 2022 saw roughly 8% — the highest since 1981. The Federal Reserve targets 2% per year.

Why doesn’t this match my personal cost increases?

CPI tracks an average urban basket of goods and services. Your personal inflation depends on what you buy — housing, healthcare, and college have outpaced average CPI for decades, while electronics have gotten cheaper.

Why does even 2–3% inflation matter so much over time?
